This typical Loire Valley ch\u00e2teau was <strong>built during the reign of Louis XIII<\/strong>, re-built in the 18th century, and then altered again in the 19th century under Charles X. The ch\u00e2teau has a long history and the first written record \u2013 dating from 1536 \u2013 already refers to it as a<strong> wine estate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The estate\u2019s distinctively sloping terrain offers a <strong>stunning view<\/strong> across the entire vineyard and as far as the village of Saint Fiacre.<\/p>\n<p>Encircled by\u00a0<strong>the Muscadet region\u2019s two rivers<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>the S\u00e8vre and the Maine<\/strong>, our wines enjoy a microclimate that gives them great minerality and freshness.<\/p>\n<p>The main terroir, or subsoil, is composed mostly of <strong>two-mica gneiss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The entrance to the property runs through the middle of the vines of <strong>Melon B.<\/strong>,\u00a0the most characteristic and common variety of the Nantais wine region.<\/p>\n<p>Two other varieties are also grown at the estate. One of these is <strong>Folle Blanche<\/strong>, a unique variety with a distinctive character, from which we make our Gros Plant du Pays Nantais.<\/p>\n<p>We make\u00a0<strong>separate wines from each plot<\/strong>, without any blending of wines. Each plot differs due to its slope and the rocks in its subsoil or terroir. Today\u2019s estate stretches over a <strong>17-hectare hillside<\/strong>. At the top of the hill there is a <strong>windmill<\/strong> which is typical of those found in the local area.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Melon B.<\/strong>\u00a0variety was\u00a0introduced in the region following the great frost of 1709 which\u00a0destroyed all the vines in the area. This variety originating in Burgundy was widely adopted after proving very well suited to the winegrowing conditions of the region.<\/p>\n<p>Ch\u00e2teau de la Gravelle has a rather unique terroir as its subsoil is composed of a <strong>volcanic rock<\/strong>\u00a0called <strong>gabbro<\/strong>,\u00a0covered with a 40cm layer of\u00a0<strong>clay<\/strong>. It was an<strong>\u00a0old commandery<\/strong>, after the property was divided up during the Vend\u00e9e Wars. The former manor house of La Cormeraie once had a moat and a private chapel. In 1794, Paul Le Gouvello, a former captain of infantry and lord of La Cormeraie became officer in the Vend\u00e9e army.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, we own <strong>eight hectares of this micaschist terroir<\/strong>, from which we produce deliciously rich Muscadets.
